After Treatment
Keep Your New Smile for Life
Finishing treatment is a big moment. Retainers are what keep it that way. Teeth naturally tend to drift over time, at any age, and a retainer holds them in their new positions.
Lost or broken retainer? We can make a new one, even if you finished treatment somewhere else.

Types of Retainers
Which Retainer Is Right for You?
Clear Retainers
Nearly invisible removable retainers, similar to aligners, custom-made from a digital scan.
Bonded Retainers
A thin wire fixed behind the front teeth that holds them in place around the clock.
Hawley Retainers
A classic removable retainer with a wire and acrylic, durable and adjustable.
Wearing Your Retainer
A Simple Routine
- 1
Follow Your Schedule
Most patients wear retainers full-time at first, then transition to nightly wear. We will give you a schedule that fits your case.
- 2
Keep It Clean
Brush removable retainers gently with cool water and mild soap. Avoid hot water, which can warp them.
- 3
Store It Safely
Always use your case. Keep retainers away from pets, which love to chew them.
- 4
Bring It to Check-Ups
We will check the fit of your retainer and make sure your teeth stay stable.
How long do I need to wear a retainer?
Teeth can shift throughout life, so we generally recommend nightly retainer wear long term.
My retainer feels tight. Is that normal?
If it feels tight after a few nights off, your teeth may have started to shift. Wear it consistently and call us if it does not seat comfortably.
Can you replace a retainer from another orthodontist?
Yes. We can scan your teeth and make a new retainer, even if you were treated elsewhere.
My teeth have shifted. What now?
Come see us. Depending on the amount of movement, a new retainer or a short course of aligners may restore your smile.
